Tauba Auerbach's Untitled (Fold) series challenges everything we expect from a painting. At first glance, each work appears to be a crumpled piece of fabric or paper. In reality, the canvas is completely flat. Before the canvas is stretched, Auerbach physically folds and creases it, then spray-paints its surface. Once unfolded and mounted, the painting preserves the memory of those folds, creating a striking trompe-l'œil illusion that sits somewhere between painting and sculpture. Every crease, shadow and highlight is the trace of a real physical event, transforming the canvas into both artwork and archive. Rooted in ideas of perception, topology and spatial form, Untitled (Fold) invites us to question what we see and reminds us that a painting can capture the history of its own making. #StoriesBetweenStrokes #Artize #BornFromArt
